| Quote: | RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 25 (Xinhuanet) -- A judge has ordered Atletic Mineiro, a small Brazilian football team, to auction its only national football trophy to pay a debt of 1,371 US dollars to a former employee, the club told reporters on Tuesday.
As well as having sentimental value, the cup is a piece of history: the 1971 competition was Brazil's first national tournament.
Former employee Maurillo Cristo de Oliveira took the club to court for a 3,100 reals debt.
Lawyers for the club say they are confident they can reach an out-of-court settlement that will not involve selling the trophy, before the planned Nov. 18 auction date. The cup has been assessed as worth 2,500 reals (1,100 US dollars).
Dario, the forward who scored the goal in the 1971 final, said he has been deeply upset by the news.
"This news is as bad as if they told me my son had died," said the former player, who was known as Dado Maravilha in his scoring days. "I am holding back the tears. If I had the money I would buythe cup myself. But I have no chance."
The club has also been ordered to sell a TV set worth 272 dollars. Enditem |
